Infertility Case Studies

35-year-old female patient came with history of two miscarriages one 3 years back and other approximately 1 and half months back had IUGR and then again miscarriage occurred. Chromosomal testing of expelled material was normal. Underwent D&C 5 weeks back. Investigations showed low Vitamin D, iron deficiency and ultrasound detected a large fibroid in the fundus area of uterus. No significant family history of any other medical conditions. She also had a long-term history of acidity and constipation problem along with irregular menstrual cycles.

Ayurvedic Pathophysiology:

  • Prakruthi– Pitta vata
  • Vikruthi– Apana vata, Pachaka pitta, ranjaka pitta
  • Dhatu involved– Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, shukra
  • Srotas– rasavaha, raktavaha, artavavaha, shukravaha.
  • Organs– Uterus, stomach, ovary
  • Samprapti– Due to improper diet and lifestyle (nidana) the pachaka pitta and apana vata got vitiated resulting in acidity and constipation problems. This vitiated pachaka pitta and apana vata caused agni (Dooshita Agni) disturbance which resulted in AMA – Undigested toxins in stomach.

Accumulated AMA eventually caused the rasa dhatu imbalance which resulted in subsequent dhatu dushti. This disturbed agni also resulted in the AMA formation which through vyana vata circulated in body and got lodged in poorishavaha srotas and caused the mamsa dhatu dushti resulting in formation of fibroid.

This ama along with vitiated apana vata caused the qualitative changes in the shukra dhatu (shukra dushti) resulting in formation of low-quality ova which is not able to survive even after fertilization and implantation resulting in miscarriages.


Ayurvedic Diet and lifestyle Advise – Need to lose weight first and follow a vata and pitta diet and lifestyle as per constitution. Also need to take nutritional supplements for Vitamin D and iron along with dietary recipe which are given below for boosting iron. Eat nourishing foods rich in calcium and iron recipes such as dates soaked in ghee and high calcium recipes included.

Specific diet restrictions– Rice, wheat, milk, sugar. No solid food after 2:30pm till morning 8:00am. Juice for evening and soups for dinner.

  • Only liquid food after 2:30pm.
  • Replace Rice with quinoa,
  • wheat with ragi, jowar, bajra and oats.
  • Milk with buttermilk and ghee.
  • Drink warm water

Drink a minimum of 8-10 glasses of hot/warm/room temperature water per day, sipped regularly every half an hour.
Drinking hot water throughout the day helps the body to flush out waste (AMA) products and prevents dehydration. Or Even better to take Lemon and ginger tea or any other herbal tea with appetisers and carminatives will be helpful. Cinnamon tea, fennel tea, CCF tea are good for digestion throughout the day.

  • Coriander Cumin Fennel Tea (CCF tea)-Great After Dinner Drink
  • ¼ tsp coriander seeds
  • ¼ tsp cumin seeds
  • ¼ tsp fennel seeds

Recipe given below:

Boil 1.5 cups of water, add seeds to boiled water. Steep for 5 minutes, remove seeds and drink when the temperature is comfortable. OR steep overnight. Seeds can be used in cooking.

  • Exercise for at least 30minutes or 30minutes brisk walk daily.
  • Yoga exercise is best like suryanamaskar and other asanas.
  • Breathing exercise (Pranayama) is good too.
  • For stress reduction Nadi shodhana is best
  • Meditate for 30 minutes in the morning or at night.

Ayurvedic Medicines and Supplements:

Based on the properly physical examination and history, practitioner will select the appropriate herbs such as Asoka, kumari, kanchanara, shathavari or leptadenia reticulata etc. These herbs can be in combinations in the form of Ayurvedic classical preparations or patented preparations based on the individual constitution – guna chikista and followed by diet and lifestyle advise.


Wash rice and mung dhal in cold water 7 times and keep ready. Heat up the ghee in a heavy bottom pan and add the mustard seeds. Fry on medium heat till they start to pop up. Add the rest of the spices and fry till they turn golden brown and give an aromatic smell (approximately 30 sec – 1 min). Do not allow them to burn. Add the rice and mung dhal, stir for a few seconds so that the mixture is coated with ghee, then add 4 cups boiling water. Cook with occasional stirring till all the rice and dhal are soft and mushy in consistency. Serves 4 people.



  • 1 cup basmati rice pre-soaked for 2- 3 hours
  • 1 cup mung dhal (washed) presoaked for 2-3 hours
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 piece of ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 very small pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 tea spoon ground coriander
  • 2 table spoons ghee
  • 1 tea spoon mustard seeds
  • 1tea spoon of whole pepper
  • 1 tea sp. lemon juice
  • 1 tea sp. Salt
  • 1 tea spoon fennel seeds
  • Cup veggies like carrot, green pea, coriander leaves

Vegetable Soup Ingredients:

  • Vegetables (of choice)
  • 2 – 3 Small red Onions
  • 2 – Chow -chow or Simple Chayote
  • Tomatoes 2 – 3
  • Water – Sufficient quantity
  • Kapha Spice mix – 1 – 1 ½ tsp (according to your taste)
  • Ghee – 1 – 2 tbsp
  • Salt – To taste


Saute the spice mix in ghee in a pan. Cut the vegetables, onions, chow -chow and tomatoes and add together into pan. Add sufficient quantity of water and cook till all the vegetables become soft and well cooked. Remove from fire and blend well in a blender and make a thick paste. Again heat on a low fire and add salt to taste.

Dates soaked in Ghee:
Soak 15 fresh dates in a 250-ml jar of ghee. Add 1 teaspoon of ginger, 1/8th teaspoon of cardamom and a pinch of saffron. Cover loosely. Keep this in a closed warm place for 1 week. Then eat 1 daily in the early morning.

Dates are rich in calcium, phosphorous and Vitamin B, strengthen GIT, increase absorption, nourish the body, satisfy sugar cravings.
